I found these photographs on a website, when I was looking for something entirely different. I found some information in English, most of which was in Hungarian. I instantly fell in love with these photographs, of Hungarian Folklore.. There's something a little eerie abut the images. I especially enjoy the images of masks and funeral.

I'd like more information, and if you can read the website for me, that would be greatly appreciated.

Budapest, one of those Central European cities with truly Gothic romantic feeling. In a autumn night, the alleys of Buda hill were empty. Only the wind twirled dead brown leaves and wailed in the tower of Matthias Church, remembering times more turbulent back in history.

I was having a clean up the other day and I came across one of the paintings I manage to salvage from my move back to England 2 years ago. It brought back many memories, including all the space I used to have to paint in and that I could actually do paintings of this size. My dream was always to be able to paint a 20 metre painting one day. I just love to do things on big surfaces. I miss those days, my life was so much happier and I left it all behind. Oh well, nit to dwell on the past, and look to the future and hope it has more to offer.

Anyway this painting put a smile on my face because it was so spontaneous and when I saw it again I thought how bright and shining it was.

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. Feel free to comment. I did some close ups of the special parts. Title of the painting is Sealife Divided, I think I did it around 2004. The mediums are, acrylic, enamel, spray paint, shells, wires and marble.

Political debates over the Olympic Games have swirled around Beijing. The Olympic torch relay—a

Political debates over the Olympic Games have swirled around Beijing. The Olympic torch relay—a tradition started by Hitler in the 1936 Games—was marred by protest. Nongovernmental organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for boycotts of the Games to protest China’s Tibet policy. But the intersection of the Games and politics is nothing new. Today, I give you the top five moments in Olympic political history:

5. Dueling Boycotts. The 1980 Olympic Games were hosted in Moscow. Less than a year earlier, the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan, sparking an international standoff between American-backed Taliban militias and the Soviet-backed government of Afghanistan. In protest of the Soviet move, the United States led a 62-nation boycott of the Moscow Olympics. Four years later, the Soviets turned the table, with a tit-for-tat boycott of the Los Angeles Olympics.

4. Blood in the Water Match. In 1956, a Hungarian nationalist uprising threatened to move Hungary from the Soviet bloc. The Soviet Union sent more than 200,000 soldiers across the border to put down the uprising, leading to violent conflicts in the street. The Hungarian water polo team, the world’s defending champions, were forced to flee the country during the uprising, and made their way to the Melbourne Olympics without knowing the outcome of the invasion. When they faced off against Soviet water polo team, the match was violent. Thousands of spectators cheered the Hungarian team and jeered the Soviets. Both teams were trading blows in the pool. Leading 4-0 with just a few minutes to go, the referees were forced to stop the match after Soviet Valentin Prokopov struck Hungarian star Ervin Zadov above the left eye, causing blood to stream down his face and into the pool.

3. Munich Massacre. The 1972 Munich Olympics were the first Games held in Germany since Hitler’s 1936 Berlin Games. The West German government used the motto “The Happy Games” and hoped to use the tournament to present to the world the democratic and optimistic West Germany. Instead, the Games were marred by the murder of 11 Israeli athletes by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September. After a one-day suspension, the Games continued. After the Games concluded, the Israeli government launched Operation Wrath of God and Operation Spring of Youth to track down and kill those responsible for the massacre.

2. Tommie Smith and John Carols’ Black Power Salute. The 1968 Olympic Games were hosted in Mexico City. But in the United States, the civil rights movement was in full swing. African Americans were fighting racial discrimination. After winning the gold and bronze medals in the 200 meters, Smith and Carlos received their medals on the podium shoeless but wearing black socks to symbolize black poverty, black scarves to symbolize black pride, and a single black glove on a hand raised in salute. Both men received death threats after the act and were ostracized by the US sporting establishment.

1. Jesse Owens’ Four Gold Medals. Hosted by Adolph Hitler’s Nazi Germany, the 1936 were intended to demonstrate to the world both the power of the Third Reich and the supremacy of Nazi ideology. When the African American Jesse Owens won four gold medals and set two world records and two Olympic records in the process—a feat not repeated until Carl Lewis performance in the 1984 Olympic games—Hitler’s propaganda mission suffered a serious blow.

Oats were at one time the main cereal crop grown in Shetland; oat brunnies (oatcakes) were the “bread” of the islands.
(Jenni Simmons, A Shetland Cookbook)

Unable to sleep, I listen to BBC Radio 3’s lunchtime concert first broadcast on Tuesday 27 July, including Ernő Dohnányi’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in E flat minor, Op. 26

I don’t know music of Dohnányi much, only his name. I decided after listening to the first movement that he is “super Romantic” composer (late Romantic would be the right way to describe him I suppose). Antti Siirala was the pianist. He is a really good pianist. I am waiting to see if he is going to be one of the great pianists. I must listen again before it disappears. I don’t know that I would buy the CD – I have far too much to listen to already.

At this moment, I am listening to my most favourite CD (Arcadi Volodos, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3) because for quite a while now I have been listening to Honegger, Hindemith, Messiaen (Proms), etc., etc., and I needed a quick burst of a favourite.

Dohnányi lived a long life (27.7.1877 – 9.2.1960). There are composers like Rachmaninoff, Enesco, Dohnányi that did not change their style and stayed Romantic well into the 20th century.

I don’t know how music historians will look at the 20th century. There were Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Hindemith, Honegger and of course Schoenberg, Berg and at the same time composers like Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Dohnányi, etc.

Musical history would certainly have been the same if Dohnányi had not written a note. But my life would have been the poorer too. I have always enjoyed his Nursery Song Variations (like many other people) but my latest discovery is his Sextet for piano, string trio, clarinet and horn (thank you, Naxos).

Apparently, in his lifetime Dohnányi was considered by many to be the finest pianist since Liszt. What a pity that he left so few recordings.

The Hungarian F1 race proved there's little as uncertain as certainty.

At the start, some would have said that Hamilton was certain to take off from pole position and leave everyone behind until he passed the line and collected a win.

A few seconds later, he was certain to have a fight on his hands and would retake the lead from Massa, the latter having less fuel and running lighter, so Hamilton just had to pass around fuelling time, if his performance didn't allow him to do soon earlier.

Sometime later, it was certain that Hamilton was not only not going to catch and pass Massa, but was going to lose his championship lead as puncture sent him to the pits and back down he places, leaving Massa certain to collect maximum points, and maybe none at all for Hamilton.

Then Hamilton spoiled things by managing to get his puncture repaired quickly and get back on track in a position that meant he'd pick up some points and maybe not drop back so far from the lead - there goes that certainty we'd had all day.

Then Ferrari had to really spoil things by giving Massa a duff engine, leaving him stranded three laps from the finish, certain only to be picking up no points at all, after spending most of the race certain to pick up maximum points.

And while he didn't make it to the podium, Hamilton thwarted the uncertainty bug by succumbing to its effect when he didn't win, but then beating it by retaining his position at the top of the driver's points table, thanks to the finishing positions of his challengers.

Three weeks and no testing until they come out to play - that's certainly going to be interesting to see what happens in this next phase of the competition, and what surprises are pulled out of the various hats as we head on the downhill stretch of this season.

I don't really care how it goes - well, I suppose I do have a preference - and would like to see Hamilton make to the top, and rub Alonso's nose in the title after the rat ruined last year for everyone. I don't know how folk react to this guy, but his body language always looks suspect to me, he seems to be head bowed and hiding all the time, and I would never trust him as far as I could throw him.

A great start for Felipe Massa and a steady pace unfortunately left the Brazilian with no points today as Heiki Kovalainen snatched his first win!

Massa has truely been unlucky this year and I can see how hard he is pushing to try and win this championship. Some say that his position might be on the line, who knows? Does Alonso feature in Ferrari's future plans? He really is a fighter and I could just imagine the feeling of disappointment 2 laps from the end after such an intense days work on the Hungarian demanding circuit. I got the feeling today that Hamilton thought that he had the race in the bag, he was confident that he will lead and most likely win after a positive weekend during testing and qualifying. However, a stroke of bad luck put him in 12th position after "luckily" getting back on the grid after desperately making his way to the pit lane. World Champion Kimi on the other hand was held up by Alonso and struggled to get past on such a narrow circuit, remaining in 7th position towards the end of the race. Only after the pit stop did he surpass Alonso and immediately pulled away to hunt down Glock in his Toyota in 3rd position. Given that overtaking was pretty much impossible, kimi remained on Glock's tail and 5 laps from the end backed off when the news that fellow team mate Massa blew his engine.

The drivers championship is very close, with the top drivers trying their best to pull out a lead. Will it be down to consistency and car reliability ? Will Ferrari pick up the Mclaren pace ? Is team Toyota up with the best? We will find out, Next stop Europe, 24/08/09 available live on ITV F1.

The one reason that Hungaroring should be and is on the F1 calendar is the certain amount of unpredictability it adds to the F1 circus. Today was no exception! Drama had started yesterday with qualifying when Heidfeld failed to qualify post for Q2. But today it was beyond all expectations. The first corner overtake, the hamilton tyre failure, the refueling rig's issue and finally Massa's Massive Blowup. My takeaways from the race:

Kovalainen is consistent and though a much less aggressive driving style has lead to pretty good results and may be a critical factor for McLaren's fight for the constructors' championship

Massa's luck has been very cruel to him and lets face it, he may be one of the greatest drivers to never be a world champion

What happened to toyota... They are going up and down every weekend and so are their drivers! Just can't predict when and how will they kill the competition!

But overall, an exciting race that brought Raikonnen back into the fray for a second WC. So onto the next race in valencia for European GP and the street circuit there should favor toyota again and should beat the hell again out of BMW. As for the top 2 teams I am not putting a penny on either of them... not sure where will this go!

A woman asks us what we're doing on her property, thankfully she speaks English. It turns out the camp that we entered was a Horse Riding Camp for children, we pay her for the use of her land but tell her of our journey and goal to Mongolia.
It looks like Joel and I got out of the city a lot faster than Ed, Adam, and Alex of Stella Performa. We also are used to making decent time and what not, but decided to wait for them at a rest stop to caravan to the camp site.

We searched on the internet and found a place outside of Nyregzaha, Hungary. Unfortunately after a bit of getting lost and asking the police for help, by the time we got there the gates were closed. Around that area there was a lot of nice houses and resorts, so we came across a few other campsites. By this time it was pitch black and we were in the countryside, and tired. We find a place that says camp and pitch and try and sleep to the sound of barking packs of dogs in the distance.

With car problems and catching up on rest, we didn't really have much time to check out all the cool touristy spots of the city. One place that was recommended by our Hungarian Friend was Heroes Square. Luckily we caught it on the way out of the city.

Wet weather is usually nothing to look forward to, with the exception of when the sun makes it under the clouds and sets the sky ablaze in pinks, purples, oranges and reds.

Surprisingly Joel was taking a bit, and I guess its a little bit

harder to find some touristy stickers to update the van. He headed out towards the river district where we went last night and didn't come up with much.

I was a bit busy e-mailing, and updating our blog as much as possible, caught up to the launch but still was a good week behind, until suddenly I get a text from Joel that we got a parking ticket. I hurry and try and pay, the serving staff is annoyed that we only ordered one sandwich and leeched on their bandwidth, and they forget my receipt.

Adam, Samson and Eddie of Team Stella Performa.
I rush out to find Joel with the van and other people with Mongol Rally Tees around the car. They're Team "Stella Performa" 3 Brits who are all childhood friends who went to school and were raised in Belgium. Similar to the international Identity of sorts Joel and I have being from the US living in Japan. I can't believe there was another team in Budapest, I thought we were left far behind.

They say they're looking for camp and don't mind banding together until we part ways when they go to Kazakhstan. Just what we needed, a good mix of people, Joel and I being the quiet types we are started running out of conversation and oddness.

We figure that since our van is running smoother and larger cities are fewer and far between ahead we decide to look up camp sites on the net. We spent a good part of the day doing an oil change and figuring out what to do with the tires and needed to get back on the road.

We finally find a free internet cafe and have a late lunch there. Joel and I haven't really used much unlimited internet, with one computer checking e-mails and updating the blog between Joel and I gets a bit time consuming. Joel checks and updates his family and everyone with e-mails and what not while I eat. I check, update the my side of the things, and try and catch up with the blog while Joel heads into town for some touristy items and we check back and forth to update the parking meter.

Here's the famous Synagogue in Budapest, we just parked down the street from it.

Yesterday when Joel and I stopped by the internet cafe, we found an English speaking repair shop called Korrect Auto Repair. We just wanted our oil changed and our tires changed over from the rims that didn't fit.

David, a Hungarian who studied in France knew more French than English, but loved watching American Cinema. He'd speak his English with a french accent.

They would've fixed our alignment problem but their lift system was broken and did all they could, unfortunately this didn't include diagnosing the Check Engine light.

I grab food while they do the oil change, and then we get our tires changed over next door. One guy speaks Russian, and no English. We get by with playing pictionary with the clerk and manager.

After doing our chores...we decide to head out and do some sight-seeing. Our Half Hungarian Friend who has family here in Budapest reccomended Vaci Street, the Castle and Heroes Square. We decide to head on foot towards the river and stop by places along the way.

Joel and I didn't really find a place to exchange our Euro so I decided to make a humble Hungarian Forint Withdrawal for 2 days, food, gas and car repairs. While we were in the tourist district, our hunger beaconed us for food in quantities and not at tourist prices near the Four Seasons on the river.

We decide on messing around with long exposures and leds. Here's Joel with a halo.

Couldn't find many places around our hostel that accepted Euro, so I decide to withdraw some funds for the nights we spend in Buda, Parking, Food and repairs. Luckily the hostel takes Euro, so our funds cover that.

Joel grab some cheap salami cuts, hummus, bread, and drinkable yogurt at the nearby supermarket. We head back, down it, do some well deserved laundry..

and knock-out siesta style. Our hour planned nap became 3 hours, it looks like we slept through our alarm.

While shops are still open, Joel and I head to an Internet Cafe, e-mail and re-update the blog. We were having a decent bit of trouble typing because the "Y" and "Z" keys as well as some puncuation keys are a bit different on hungarian keyboards.

You never know when or where or how you're going connections with someone!

When I flew back from California (attending the Hymn Society Conference and visiting with my brother and his partner), I was on the side of the plane with two seats. My seatmate was an elderly lady who--at least at the first part of the flight--didn't seem interested in visiting. She was pleasant enough, but she spent much of the time dozing.

That didn't hurt my feelings. I had some reading I wanted to do, and I was really rather tired from all the activities of the last couple of weeks.

However, about halfway through the flight, we passed through some incredibly white clouds--clouds that looked like you could bounce on them. My seatmate was studying them, and so was I. She turned and made some innocuous comment about them...and one thing led to another.

She had an accent, a German one I thought. So I asked her what part of Germany she was from. Her response was that she was actually from Hungary...and now lived the next small village over from where my brother lives. What a small world! My brother had lived in Budapest for several years when he was beginning his teaching career!

When I asked her what brought her to the United States, she debated about how much of her story to tell me, and then decided to give me many of the details, historical details I was not at all familiar with.

At the Yalta Conference in 1945, when Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt basically carved the world into spheres of influence, Stalin was given permission to import "guest workers" from conquered areas under his control. Maria (my seatmate) was the age they were looking for--women between the ages of 17 and 35. She was sent to Russia to work in a mine.

When her time was up, she returned to her home, but not for long. The authorities wanted her to go to the surrounding areas, encouraging others to sign up for the guest worker program--telling them what a great experience it had beeen. But she refused. She said she had worked but would not tell lies to other young women. There had been 70 taken from her home town--and 12 came back alive.

She had an aunt who had emigrated to the United States and so she was working to find a way to join her. At that time the United States did not have political asylum--the only way she could come was (if I understood her correctly) if she was in the medical field or a religious person. She went to her Lutheran pastor who filled out the paperwork and then told her, "Maria, I have lied, but I think God will forgive me. I said you were a deaconess--but you do not have to do that."

She told me more about her life after she was here--the trials she and her first husband went through in trying to buy land in Colorado...only to discover that the man they had bought the land from sold the water rights separately. In trying to take him to court, he had strong political connections that caused them to lose their suit...

Her life here has not always been easy--but she still carried a positive spirit, even though she's had to give up her home and now lives in a nursing home.

Connections...you make them at times and in places that are totally unexpected! But what a blessing they can be!!
