Add a French yacht and an Egyptian cargo ship to the list of approximately 10 vessels that are now being held hostage by pirates off the coast of Somalia.  The French vessel is a sail boat with 3 people on board, and the Egyptian ship has a crew of 25.  The Egyptian vessel, the M/V Al Mansourah was laden with cement and enroute to Djibouti when it was attacked.    Article here and here.

The government of Malaysia has had enough and is sending 3 warships to the region.  Two of the ten ships currently being held are Malaysian flagged, the Bunga Melati Dua and the Bunga Melati 5.

Officials in the semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland say the ships are being held at the port of Eyl, a lawless outpost controlled by gangs.

Puntland's minister for mines, who is leading a delegation to investigate the hijackings, told the BBC Somali Service from a hill overlooking the port that he could count eight captured vessels.

He said another two were reported to be on their way to Eyl.

The delegation had spoken to local elders, he said, but it had not approached the pirates.

The latest vessel to be hijacked was an Egyptian ship which was reported missing on Thursday.

Earlier this week a French sailing boat with two crew was seized.

Pirates holding that boat are reportedly seeking a ransom of more than $1m (£0.56m).

Puntland's ports minister said after the capture of the French boat that pirates in the region were well-armed and employ a lot of people.

He said there was little co-ordination between those trying to tackle them.

In June, the UN Security Council voted to allow countries to send warships into Somalia's waters to tackle the pirates, but the ports minister complained that international vessels "don't intervene".

I think that with this much intel and information available, it must compel the international forces in the area, particularly the U.S. Fifth Fleet to take decisive action to recover these ships and crew members from the hands of lawless terrorists.  To do anything else would be toleration of their acts.

With the support of the U.S. [the world's police], the Ethiopian government had cooked up a threat that was non-existent, to make the case for invading Somalia.

And now, after creating Africa's biggest Humanitarian crisis, the Meles regime had indicated its strong urge to pull its troops out of Somalia, comletely.

With the full backing of the U.S., the Meles regime figured it would invade a sovereign country, and leave it in disarray, without any one to hold them accountable.

"We were invited by the Transitional government", was the explanation Premier Zenawi gave for his invasion of Somalia. And later, he would point out some "verbal" threats made against Ethiopia by some thugs of the Islamic Court Union.

For the longest, the Meles regime had tried its best to display some act of bravery by willing to stay overstay in Somalia, just like its confederate in Iraq.

But in the end, at least in Ethiopia's case, the invasion of Somalia and its ill-success would be remembered by history. Let there be no doubt that history would use its most agonizing and stinging ink to chronicle this moment, and Ethiopia would e deserving of it.

Where Is The "Clear Mission" of This War Invasion?

The U.S. could clearly justify any action after September 11th. Only once before had America been attacked on its own soil, at Pearl Harbor.

Most Americans were shaken and left paralyzed withfear. Even then, in the aftermath of Sep. 11, the United States was careful in choosing who it should go after.

In contrast, ethiopia had not been attacked when it decided to invade Somalia.

from the beginning, this mission had been about Ethiopia's willingness to fulfill America's [goal and agenda] to hunt for and kill suspected Al-Qaeda members in Somalia.

with no chance of approval from congress, yet to wage another war in Somalia, the Bush administration, were faced with one - ond only one- option, outsourcing this job to Ethiopia.

And with Ethiopia lacking any immediate threat from Somalia, someone else had to play a part in cooking up this project. Thus, the invitation of Ethiopian troops by the Somalian Transitional Federal Government (TFG).

The TFG had long been viewed as a puppet government by its people. And it had been in a power-struggle with the Islamic Court Union (ICU), who had been very popular among the Somalis, and in control of most of Somalia's land, including the capital Mogadishu.

In the end, the invasion of Somalia by Meles & Co. is just another extension of the war on terror, sponsored by Bush & Co.

Why Somalia Will Be Just Fine, And Ethiopia Probably Won't

An invasion had never been easy for a rich country like United States, much less for poor Ethiopia.

In the wake of Russia's invasion of Georgia ["U.S. Ally"], we have witnessed the firmness in which the United States can denounce such an act. But the same firmness in denouncing Ethiopia's invasion of a Somalia had been, non-existent at best.

The fact is no one forced [or could force] the Meles regime to do anything. And blaming the U.S. only helps showcase the weakness of our spineless leadership.

If we'd learned anything from Africa's past, it is the reality that the West is only interested in Africa for obvious reasons. [To fulfill its agenda]

And in Ethiopia's case, when and if America decides to abandon us, we are left to answer questions to our neighbors.

The Melesregime had inflicted an unspeakable wound in Somalians and that would be remembered for generations of Somalians to come. And for the generations of Ethiopians to come, they are burdened with the job of apologizing the abysmal failure of the Meles regime in Somalia.

Incompetence Across The Board

Among many other heinous acts, the Meles regime is guilty of, the lack of competence.

Our leadership had dropped the ball in every aspect of Somalia's invasion. The rebellion by which the Ethiopian troops were met, was in no way unforeseen. If anything, the leaders of the ICU had forewarned of this danger.

Invasion must be planned and one must prepare for the overwhelming burden of peacekeeping and securing the nation it chooses to invade. That also had been lacking in Somalia. The Meles regime clearly choosing to leave kids and their parents in the hands of fate.

It is my core belief that Somalia poses no more threat than does Pakistan, Chechnya, Russia, or China's Xinjiang Province. [All, places much worse than Somalia would ever be]

However, we never hear of a million Pakistanis leaving their country and taking refuge, as a result of a war waged against a handful of Islamic Terrorists.

No sensible leader would've OK'd what Meles had.

But i guess, the value of life in Africa is much lesser than that of Pakistan or elsewhere in the world.

What Would Be Worse?

It would be only be worse if we don't start reconciliation. And as a nation we can start by, apologizing profusely. It is only the right thing to do.

Let's be brave enough to begin the heeling process. And the rest is up to a higher power.

No, not the Napster kind, nor the Johnny Depp swashbuckling hero of Hollywood movies. Unfortunately, a major source of kidnapping in Somalia happens on the high seas, in the Gulf of Aden. An Egyptian vessel has become the latest in a series of casualties, following on the heels of French tourists being captured a few days ago. The Malaysian Star earlier this week called the incidences of kidnapping vessels “unprecedented” and cited the figure of 260 persons having been seized off the coast of Somalia this year.

Kidnappings on land are also a frequent occurrence in Somalia, a lawless country which for more than a decade has been plagued by civil war, inter-clan rivalries and problems with its neighbour Ethiopia.

Malaysia deploys navy to Somalia

Malaysia is sending three navy ships to the coast of Somalia to protect merchant vessels from piracy.

The ships, carrying troops and helicopters, are expected to begin patrolling in the Gulf of Aden in the next few days.

Two Malaysian tankers from the shipping line MISC Berhad were seized last month by Somali pirates.

The seas off Somalia, close to busy shipping routes, have some of the highest rates of piracy in the world.

The country has been without a functioning central government for 17 years and has suffered from continual civil strife.

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said the ships being deployed would provide protection for five MISC Berhad vessels, and would not launch rescue operations.

UN / Increase in piracy / Statement by the UN Special Representative for Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia, September 5, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has said he is extremely alarmed by the increase in piracy carried out against ships both in Somali waters and in international waters near Somalia.

"This piracy is increasingly a threat to international navigation and free trade in an already fragile environment. The millions of dollars in ransom paid to the pirates and their associates inland and overseas has become a multi-million dollar business which threatens stability in Puntland and in Somalia as a whole," said Mr Ould-Abdallah.

Up to ten ships are reported to be held by pirates at present. Local Somali authorities say that trade to ports, particularly in the north, has been badly affected.

"I am very happy that the Security Council passed Resolution 1816 on piracy in June this year and that the international community has shown its determination to stop these criminals," said Mr Ould-Abdallah. "However these criminals are challenging this Security Council resolution and the time has come for a collaborative effort to put the resolution into effect.

"We have to work quickly before the level of criminal activity increases and affects ports in neigbouring countries. We must work together to put an end to this terrible scourge."

The U.N. Security Council rejected on Thursday a request from Somalia to send a peace-keeping force to the violence-torn nation, saying it would consider doing so when conditions there had improved. But in an official statement, the 15-nation council asked U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to step up contingency planning for such a force and approach states to seek troop offers. It requested him to report back in 60 days.

The council was responding to an appeal from Somalia's interim government and an opposition faction with which it signed a peace agreement last month to send a force within 120 days to replace a small, ill-funded African Union (AU) force. The council said it "takes note of" the request, and was willing to consider "at an appropriate time" a U.N. operation "subject to progress in the political process and improvement in the security situation on the ground."

The government of the Horn of Africa nation and part of the Eritrea-based Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia signed a peace deal on August 18, but it has been rejected by opposition hard-liners and done little to quell violence.

More than 8,000 civilians have been killed and 1 million uprooted in fighting since early last year which pits President Abdullahi Yusuf's government and allied Ethiopian forces against Islamist rebels. Anarchy has reigned in Somalia since a dictator was overthrown in 1991.

The existing U.N.-backed AU force in Somalia is meant to consist of 8,000 troops but has only 2,600 soldiers from Uganda and Burundi on the ground. Nigeria has promised another 850.The Security Council has repeatedly fended off AU requests to send U.N. peace-keepers, leery of putting troops into a country where 18 U.S. soldiers and hundreds of Somalia militiamen died in a battle in 1993.

The incident inspired a Hollywood movie, "Black Hawk Down," and marked the beginning of the end for a U.S.-U.N. peace-keeping force.

Not just because I love her sappy acting but also because it made me think of also those who fight to come to America. I am thinking of refugees from countries like Somalia and Sudan. I am thinking of those who jump the border from Mexico, almost dying and risking never seeing their families. And I am also thinking of those young men and women in countries like India and China who study 16-20 hours a day so they can pass state exams, which will guarantee them a seat in a good college and eventually bring them to the U.S.

Are their struggles in vain, when someone like Susan Sarandon can so carelessly say she will just move to Canada or Italy. Poof and she is gone. I have been reading the papers and the blogs and people seem upset that she and other stars have said things like this before and never kept their promise. To me what is more upsetting is that amidst this manufactured war between Republicans and Democrats in the name of elections and politics, we have given the American people an exit strategy but not the war in Iraq.

This is the third pirate attack on a yacht in 2008, although there are attacks on large cargo ships in the Gulf of Aden ond off the coast of Somalia all the time. In fact there are currently over 100 hostages being kept in Somalia.

Warning to all cruising sailboats and motor yachts: Do not transit the Gulf of Aden, or get anywhere near the Somalia coastline until the pirate situation settles down.

The ICU was pushed back in 2006 by Ethiopian forces intervening in the Somali civil war which lasts about 20 years now. Since then the ICU is slowly gaining back territory. A few days ago they claimed to have captured the third largest city of Somalia Kismayo.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Mortar shells slammed into Somalia's capital on Wednesday as insurgents vowed to intensify attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Somalia already sees near-daily explosions of bloodshed, and thousands of Somalis — most of them civilians — have been killed since Islamic fighters began an Iraq-style insurgency in December 2006, after they were driven from power in Mogadishu and much of the south.

At least four people were killed early Wednesday, said several witnesses who reported seeing the dead in two different neighborhoods of southern Mogadishu. It was not possible to get official confirmation because Ethiopian forces never speak to journalists and Somali authorities do not normally offer casualty figures or share other information about the violence in the capital.

The two sides exchanged mortar and heavy machine-gun fire in a two-hour battle, forcing terrified residents to cower in their homes.

Wednesday's violence was the worst since Aug. 21, when four hours of fighting outside the presidential palace killed 12 people and injured 17 others.

The insurgents are trying to topple the government and drive out Ethiopian troops who are propping up the administration.

"If we die while fasting for the sake of Allah, we will go to heaven," a 26-year-old Islamic fighter, Abdi Yusuf, told The Associated Press by telephone. "So there is no reason why we shouldn't intensify the fighting."

During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to abstain during daylight hours from food, drink, smoking and sex, to focus on spiritual introspection. But the Islamists' spokesman Abdirahin Issa Adow said fighters have "decided to redouble attacks against the Ethiopians and their stooges during the holy month of Ramadan," which began this week.

He said the Ramadan attacks do not violate the Quran because his fighters are battling "enemies of Allah."

Somalia has been at war since 1991, when clan-based militias ousted a socialist dictator and then fought for power among themselves. The conflict is complicated by clan loyalties and the involvement of archenemies Eritrea and Ethiopia, who back opposite sides in the fighting.

The last U.N. peacekeeping force in Somalia included American troops who arrived in 1992 and tried to arrest warlords and create a government. That experiment in nation-building ended in October 1993, when fighters shot down a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter during a battle that killed 18 American soldiers.

Since then, Ethiopian troops have helped Somalia's shaky transitional government push the Islamists from power in Mogadishu and much of the south, but failed to establish security or improve living standards.
